For our first essay of the course, I am asking you to write a close reading of “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin. A close reading is an essay which makes a clear and specific claim about a text and then supports it with quotes from the text (“evidence”). You should write this essay by considering the literary elements that we discussed in class (theme, setting, figurative language, symbolism, etc.) and then making an argument about the text. Keep the focus entirely on the text for the essay. For example, if you write about the setting in the story, you might mention the time period when it takes place. However, don’t fall into the trap of writing an essay only about that time period and not about the text itself.
Remember that to write a formal essay, you need:
• A strong thesis statement (the claim that the paper will work to prove to be true)
• Five or more paragraphs: an introduction, conclusion, and three (or more) body paragraphs
• Quotations from the text that work as evidence (show that what you are claiming is true)
• A works cited page • MLA formatting (Times New Roman size 12 font, consistent double spacing, and a heading with your name, my name, the class, and the due date of the assignment)
• A title
Please note that it is crucial that you do all your own work on this assignment.
