Followership and Servant Leadership Fundamentals
As Aristotle said, “He who cannot be a good follower, cannot be a good leader.” In this essay we will compare and contrast Followership and Servant Leadership Fundamentals; two different principles that Army leadership must apply on a daily basis to connect with their fellow soldiers. We will go over their characteristics and how they relate to one another.
According to the Kelley’s Model of Follower Behaviour, there are 5 types or categories of followers, with the most crucial to the Army mission being the Effective Followers. Per the model, Effective followers “can think for themselves, act as needed to carry out their duties, often identifying problems and points out the problems to the leader before the problems become insurmountable, and be unafraid to question the leader.” Effective followers are capable of using critical thinking. These followers are loyal to their leader and will put the mission needs above their own. They are able to make independent decisions to accomplish their mission. Effective followers incorporate Servant Leadership Fundamentals traits in their acts, such as trust and vision
Per the NCO Journal, a Servant Leader is capable of “putting the needs of others first and helping people develop and perform as highly as possible — is ingrained in Army culture and within the NCO Corps.” Servant leaders are modelled and guided by seven characteristics that contribute to their personality. They exhibit and practice the following qualities: agape love, humility, altruism, trust, vision, empowerment and service (Wesson, 2017).
