Life offers each of us rare moments when we feel completely engaged. This sense of
connection can be with our surroundings, other people, or ourselves. They are the
moments when we feel most alive and most complete. Tell the story of one such time;
use narration, description, and illustration to present concrete examples that leave a
dominant impression with the reader. You might describe a place revisited after you were
absent for a number of years, like in E.B. White’s “Once More to the Lake,” or describe
childhood realizations as in Angelou’s “My Name is Margaret” and Gregory’s “Shame.”
You may also use a topic of your own choice or from the “Suggestions for Writing”
sections in Chapter 8. I highly recommend sticking with nonfiction because you can pull
details and the narrative from real life. Use carefully chosen, well-organized details
observed from an appropriate vantage point.
Use a generous amount of descriptive devices we have read about and discussed in class
that will evoke for the reader the sensations experienced. Each essay should tell a story to
make a larger point, which should create the dominant impression the reader is left with
at the end. Use sensory detail and vivid word choice.
Be sure to choose a subject that interests you. If you aren’t interested, your audience
likely won’t be either.
We will not be peer editing this final essay, but you should still be applying the lessons
learned on the recursive writing process. Use the tools you have learned work for you.
Have a peer help with revision, read it aloud to yourself, submit it to Thinkingstorm, or
take it to the Student Success Center for help from a tutor. The first publish should never be
the final publish.
