When an individual accepts a foreign assignment they can prepare for such an assignment risk in many different ways. Global Expansion (2022) listed eight different tips in which an expatriate can use to be successful in their project as follows: pre-move training, sourcing immigration support, ensure continued communication, provide support on the ground, undertake project alignment meetings, invest in knowledge management, provide home and host sponsorship, and take into account domestic duties. The largest items within the pre-move training that are important are that individuals start learning the basic language in that area if they don’t currently speak it along with learning about the cultures from that region as well because this will all play into how they communicate and work with the public and employees once they are there (Global Expansion, 2022). Once it is also official that the employee is going to be going to the new country, it is important that they are leading meetings with the teams that were responsible for creating and starting the project at hand so that communication is continued and they are up to speed on the timelines, goals, and all other vital parts of their duties.
Some preparedness can also fall back on the company that is sending the expatriate. The company should always “consider the support that they provide to the employee during predeparture, while away on assignment, and upon repatriation” (McNett, 2022). To help assist with the smooth transition the company should help setup a home and a host family for the employee (McNett, 2022). Having a home setup for the employee will greatly take one of the worries about moving away from them and allow them to focus more on their duties and responsibilities that they are to be in charge of upon their arrival. Also, with the help of a host family, the employee can have somewhat of a built in support system that can help them with learning about where to go in the new city and other questions that they might have once they are there. Having all of these things in place will great improve the results of the projects for both the employee and thus the company.
